As if the controversial ringmaster of the OF Blog of the Fallen, wasn’t already the bane of my existence, he’s gone ahead and tagged me in one of those internet memes that people either love or hate. But, no matter my feelings on them, I can never resist the opportunity to take part. The meme this time around is:

You were hoping for a sentence involving wenches and/or pirates, weren’t you? :P As for that “taste” thing, I suspect there are some places where they’d coincide. Oh, and that Brooks graphic novel was okay, by the way ;)
Yeah, presents are fun and all, but wenches and/or pirates are even better. I should have grabbed a copy of Tim Power’s On Stranger Tides, that would sure have been a good time….
Yeah, I know there are a lot of authors/novels we agree on, I was just stuck, when looking at your commentary on SFX’s Top 100 list, how far our tastes differ sometimes. But, hey, there’s more than enough room for both of us, right?
As for Brooks’ graphic novel: yeah, it was alright. Nothing to set the world afire, but certainly an entertaining read. I’m reading his next novel, The Gypsy Morph, right now and I’m wishing that less people would have been turned off by The Sword of Shannara. Brooks has evolved a lot since then and I think his latest trilogy deserves a lot more attention from those who’ve dismissed him as a hack. He’s doing some fun and innovative writing write now.
Well, I received that last book of his and I’m not going to read it, mostly because I’m not invested in that world (and I don’t have the previous two volumes). I will give it away sometime to someone who does want it, however. As for the taste thing, I’d be shocked to find many, if any, whose tastes coincided largely with mine. Knowing this doesn’t make me feel as though mine are “superior,” just merely different (while all the while I try to entice others to read certain things).
I guess that’s just a longer way of saying that we’ve evolved our own niches, huh? :P
Give it a shot sometime, Larry. I’d be interested to see what you, of all people, thought of it. There’s no worries about being invested in the world because Brooks basically starts creating it in the first volume of the series.
I’m not confident enough to say that you’ll like the books, but I’d be curious to see what people who aren’t fans of Brooks think of the novels.
It seems like that past year has seen a lot of us bloggers start to develop our own niche, which is only improving the atmosphere for the folk who read our drivel, I think.
Thanks for the tagging! :) I’ll probably do mine tomorrow :D I’m also planning on giving Brooks another go — I read his first novel a while back and wasn’t impressed.

Chris, His first novel is easily one of the weakest things he’s written. Give Running with the Demon a shot. That trilogy is his strongest (and most innovative) work.
