I just picked up this one from the library today, I’ve been looking forward to the U.S release ever since The Painted Man was released in the UK.

As you say, the blurb suggests pretty standard fantasy fare, which is what prevented me from picking this book up. After reading your review, though, I’m tempted to give it a shot, although I have a long and ever-growing reading list to plow through. I actually like the promise of a book that isn’t entirely action-driven. While I certainly enjoy the occasional rousing pursuit or epic battle, I gravitate toward the emotional and philosophical development of characters.

Man, I am so in the minority in that I can’t get into this book. Nice review though, Aidan. Makes me want to give it another go (but not until after I read a couple of books I know I will enjoy first).
