Just a little funny thing since you mentioned that is seemed like “crooked” was the favorite word of James Enge – another of his novels is called “This Crooked Way”.

It’s interesting to see other people with similar opinions to mine. When I first picked up the novel, I did so because it seemed to have a more or less unanimously positive reputation. It’s probably one of the reasons I was so disappointed by it.

I dunno I found a lot of entertainment in the random banter and, when combined with a lot of interesting set pieces in the novel, found everything rather enjoyable. However, you do have some rather cogent points and I’m willing to concede that that while I certainly enjoyed the book it is not necessarily a strong “novel.”

I got the audio version based on earlier (and more positive) reviews and have been disappoited ever since. I’m half-way through and had to stop to seriously consider finishing it to write a review. Still haven’t decided, but I think your review is spot on (at least with what I’ve made it through so far).

I agree with your review, especially with the lack of character development for Hope. She was a tantalizing character who, if developed, could have been a vehicle for some great world-building and magic development. I too really wanted to like the book, but I came away wishing for more.
