Hugo Awards Logo

It’s Hugo Award season. You know what that means, right? And endless line of authors/publishers/writers/editors/artists parading their 2011 works and begging you to vote for them. And bloggers, like me, for A Dribble of Ink. I’m eligible for ‘Best Fan Writer’ for this blog, my contributions to SF Signal and my twitter feed (that counts, right?). A Dribble of Ink is eligible for ‘Best Fanzine’ (which is still a ridiculous and antiquated category). So, think of me when you’re filling out your ballot. Lord knows I’d appreciate it and would love to see a blogger (myself or another) make the short list.

All right, you’ve got my nominations for both categories. :) Thanks for the reminder!

I’ve been trying to get one of y’all on the ballot for two years now!

While I understand that old school fanzines are still around (hence, the rotating seven that get nominated every year), but my opinion is that the true modern day fanzine is the blog. Yeah, they don’t have “issues” (unless you’re forcing entries into issues), but blogs are the truest expression of fanzines. It’s what fanzine writers would have done twenty, thirty, and more years ago if they had the internet to use the way we do.

This reminds me that I need to get a supporting membership so I can nominate again, even though my reading was waaaaay down this year.

The “truest expression of fanzines today”, I meant to say.

Blogs are a fan conversation between fans AND between the fans and professionals. And, they can occur with greater immediacy than the old issue style fanzine. Quality can range just as much as a fanzine.

I don’t want to see the fanzine category go away, but I’d like to see a greater recognition of what fan writing is today. But then, is there a huge difference between fanzine and fan writer? (Except that Scalzi can get fan writer for his blog)

Wait wait wait, didn’t you just tell everyone to consider nominating those in the post below? I’m so confused now! ;) I totally agree with the sentiment that a blogger should be at least nominated. Someone!
