Let’s Celebrate: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Far over the Misty Mountains cold,

Today marks the worldwide release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. To celebrate, I’ve gathered together some of my favourite art, professional and amateur, together to celebrate the wonderful legacy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s best (yep, best) work.

To dungeons deep and caverns old,

We must away, ere break of day,

To seek our pale enchanted gold.

I will fully admit to nicking most of these images from a post at Tor.com, also celebrating some of the wonderful art created in celebration of The Hobbit. So, have you seen the film? What did you think? And, what are some of your favourite pieces of art from The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings?

    Film was excellent. So pleased with it overall, and was surprised as I thought I might have more issues with it.

    My favorite art is Alan Lee’s, but Donato’s is amazing as well and John Howe has some really nice stuff too.

    I really like the simplicity of the second picture taken from Tolkien of the barrels passing through Mirkwood. I also like the Nasmith, again of Mirkwood – I detect a theme here. Perhaps I have a ‘thing’ for trees!

    HI!

    Just wanted to let you know that the artwork labeled as being created by Ian Escobar Loos (the story of the Hobbit) was actually created by David E. Alter Jr. in 1982 . Really would like to make sure the correct artist gets the credit here.

    The artwork called, “Bilbo’s Great Adventure” was featured as a postcard in, “Tolkien’s Hobbit and Lord of the Rings postcard book” published in 2007. :D
