A few weeks ago I posted the underwhelming US cover for Terry Brooks’ upcoming novel, The Gypsy Morph. Orbit has since released the cover for the UK edition:
It seems to depict the same scene as the US edition, but I like the simplicity and desolation of this one much more!
I haven’t seen the US cover, but I do like this one. I often like the UK covers better than the US ones. Publishers seem to think that Americans want to be dazzled by bright colors and elaborate artwork, when, as you said, sometimes simplicity wins the day. A good example is the Discworld series. The American mass market paperbacks look cartoonish and cheesy, while the UK trade paperback editions are simple and tasteful.
Seth,
I went ahead and amended the original post with a link to the US cover. I meant to do that in the first place!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks some of the American publishers go a little overboard with some of the covers they put together. And then they wonder why they can’t sell their novels to anyone but the hardcore fantasy readers!
Neither one really excites me, but if I had to choose I would go with the UK version…
Yeah I’m not so hot on either of them. I like the colors of the US version a little more, but the UK cover is slightly cooler anyway…
I’d rather have the UK cover for this one. Then I’d have a more complete set… a cool minimalist book 1 cover, a sweet fantasy book 2 cover, then a UK book 3 cover. Makes about as much sense as having the US cover book 3 cover. ;)
I get the message of the US book 3 cover though… the burning of the world with the Knight of the Word looking on as the kids cross over into the garden of the King of Silver River… Looks crappy though.
I definitely prefer the UK version. The US version is just kind of… there. The UK version at least seems to have some emotion to it.
[…] A couple of months ago I posted of what seemed, at the time, to be the UK cover art for Terry Brooks’ The Gypsy Morph. Well, it looks like Orbit changed their mind and this new cover has recently popped up online. […]
