An Aside | Breaking News: Raymond E. Feist to complete A Song of Ice and Fire

Judging by this cover image (and its striking similarity to THIS, THIS, THIS, THIS and THIS), I would like to break the news that George R.R. Martin has been kicked off of A Song of Ice and Fire. The series has been handed off to the prolific Raymond E. Feist and The Winds of Winter has been re-named At the Gates of Darkness. One can assume that Pug will be teleported to Westeros, be a supreme Deus Ex Machina badass and save the day single-handedly, thus ending the series one book early.

The British Feist covers were redesigned a couple of years back to cash in on the success of the Martin redesigns from 2003. Feist and Martin have the same UK publisher; also check out Robin Hobb’s new UK covers which are also similar.
I’ve seen the Hobb ones, which are okay, but at least they are a bit more distinct (with the textured background and the stylized artwork).
I’d never seen these Feist ones, which are hilariously close to the Martin covers, same publisher or not.
I can so see that.
Pug will open a rift between Midkemia and Westeros where he’ll magically disentangle the Meereenese Knot. Dany takes off with one of her dragons on an interestellar flight to Kelewan and will end up as slave in the swamps but eventually rise to empress. Pug will proclaim Jon king of the Iron Throne because a lot of fans want to see him there, Tyrion will find Tysha, and Bran will become a wolf. Arya gets her own spinoff series where she figures as master spy and assassin.

In all seriousness, I’d have no problem with this…
For a second I almost believed it, and my heart almost broke…
Oh, that’s funny.
And if you’ve read anything Feist has done in the last decade, and in particular Rides a Dread Legion, this would leave you running in horror.
There is a scene near the end of that book which should have had an incredible emotional impact and should have been comparable to one he did years and years ago – but it was almost embarrassing on how poorly executed it was.
Ray isn’t writer enough to hold George’s eraser.
But this is still funny.
