Yesterday, Final Fantasy VI (affectionately, and confusingly known as Final Fantasy 3 when it was first released in North America) turn 20 years old. The series changed significantly in the years that followed, so it’s fun to look back at this classic game and remember the impact it had on an entire generation of gamers.
Here’s a little bit of trivia: Scott Lynch named Locke Lamora, protagonist of his popular Gentleman Bastards series, after Locke Cole, one of the central characters in Final Fantasy VI!
What is your favourite memory from Final Fantasy VI?
I can’t express to you just how much I love this game and I’m not sure I have a single favorite memory.
Today, my top memory would be General Leo fighting Kefka at Thamasa. My heart just broke. You’ve got this old soldier, a decent and moral man, and he is trying to do the right thing and stop Kefka from destroying the Espers, and oh…every time, man.
Otherwise:
The opera scene
The Shadow dreams
Celes and Locke.
Strago, Relm, and the dog. And Shadow. Because.
Actually, my #2 right now is Ultros. Just a funny character / enemy. And, isn’t there a sequence later in the game with Relm where Ultros calls himself Uncle Ulty and feels bad when he hurts her feelings?
