Every year, I like to gather together some of my favourite bloggers/fan writers and give them some extra exposure. If you’re voting for the Hugos, consider these bloggers/blogs for the ‘Best Fan Writer’ and ‘Best Fanzine’ awards!
My Favourite Blogs of 2011
Staffer’s Musings, edited by Justin Landon
Landon’s blog is new to the scene, but in the nine months he’s been around, he’s become one of my favourite voices in the community. He’s funny, but manages to use that sense of humour to eloquently and convincingly articulate his opinions and insights (even if I don’t always agree with him). He seems to post a new review each day, and he’s begun to interview authors. I expect big things of Landon in 2012. Plus, he looks like this.
Some posts of note:
- Review of Shadow Prowler by Alexey Pehov
- Best SFF Book of 2011
- Heroism in Lord of the Rings, its Character Structures, and Aragorn’s Relationship to Strider

Bookworm Blues, edited by Sarah Chorn
Sarah’s got a quiet blog, but there’s a lot of wisdom there and I often find myself agreeing with her opinions. She writes some of the best reviews on the ‘net.
Some posts of note:
- Not a Review — Percepliquis by Michael J. Sullivan
- Are Book Reviews Objective?
- Review of Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge
- Female Authors

Sam Sykes, author of Black Halo
Sykes is best known as the author of Tome of the Undergates and Black Halo, but it’s his blog that really impresses me. He’s not afraid to tackle weighty issues, defend his cover art or use his acerbic wit to make a point. Consistently interesting.

Mad Hatter’s Bookshelf & Book Review, edited by Michael
Michael always seems to beat me to the punch where cover art is concerned, and for that alone I recommend his blog. Great commentary, concise opinion.
Some posts of note:
- Review of Theft of Swords by Douglas Hulick
- How often do you read outside of SFF?
- GROUP THINK | What is one device from a Science Fiction novel (or film) you wish were real?

Epiphany 2.0, edited by N.K. Jemisin
Nevermind that she wrote one of my favourite novels of 2010, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (REVIEW), like Sykes, Jemisin’s an author that has taken her blog beyond the realm to self-promotion to tackle interesting, hard-hitting topics that concern genre readers, writers, publishers and fans alike. Always makes me ponder.

So, then, what were your favourite blogs in 2011?
Great post and great choices. I’m happy to admit that I’m already subscribed to almost all of those blogs (along with yours ofcourse!) and they always deliver!
Unexpected, but wholly appreciated. Thanks Aidan, I like you too.
I just found a new blog or two to read thanks to this post. I was already subscribed to most of the ones you mentioned, but I’m always looking for more new awesome blogs to read. Thanks!
Wow! I am flattered that I found myself on your list. That really made my day. Thanks!!
Awhh, shucks. Thanks. You’re right on the money about Justin and Sarah.
All great blogs, and yeah I read both Justin and Sarah on a daily basis. :D Nice post Aidan!
