Qavah the Brave by Wes Talbott

Qavah the Brave (Art by Wes Talbott)

We’re all aware of the prototypical ‘tough’ heroine that floats perpetuates itself in the the Fantasy/Science Fiction/Superhero art world: clothes a-tatter, cleavage heaving, an uncomprehendingly contradictory air of both immense sexuality, helplessness and badassness. But, what about all those little girls (and boy) who are growing up and looking for a strong, female rolemodel. Whether a beautiful portrait, or an inspiring character, I’ve gathered together a collection of strong women who kids (and adults) can hopefully find some inspiration in.

When I grow up, I’m gonna be

I don’t have children, but when I do, I won’t mind one bit if they look up to characters like these and, just maybe, tell me, “Daddy, when I grow up, I wanna be a Knight, a Super Woman, A Wizard!” (Or even a Time Lord Lady.) For more art like this, check out my post on ‘Women Fighters In Reasonable Armor’

Who are some of your favourite inspirational women in Science Fiction, Fantasy or Comic Books?

Lord of the Ring Back Tattoo

Not that I’d ever advise anyone that such a tattoo is a good idea, but… holy crap. That’s kinda beautiful. Looks like it might be inspired by Alan Lee‘s artwork?

Oh, and I know that it’s probably a Lord of the Rings tattoo, with presumably Gimli and Legolas in the two corners, but we’ll just pretend that that’s Glóin and The Hobbit era Legolas, son of Thranduil, so that my pun-tastic title can stay.

The Dark Defiles by Richard Morgan

Yep, it’s dark alright. And defiled. After the blades on the covers of the previous covers for the A Land Fit for Heroes series, The Steel Remains and The Cold Commands, it’s certainly an in your face change for the series. Pretty bitchin’, if you’ll excuse the term. It feels like a death metal version of the recent UK cover for Terry Brooks’ Bloodfire Quest, which, well, is a hilarious way to think of the series in general.

Breathtaking Lord of the Rings by Jian Guo

Jian Guo, a Chinese artist known as Breathing2004 on DeviantArt, almost literally took my breath away when I first saw these images. Wonderful, haunting, fun and endlessly explorable, these stained-glass visions of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic classic scence from Lord of the Rings are simply wonderful.

More of Jian Guo’s art, including some equally wonderful, though stylistically different, artwork of World of Warcraft, can be found on his DeviantArt page. Somebody’s got to snap this guy up to do some cover art.
